Montravius (Tray) Johnson Obituary

Celebration of Life of

Montravius Antonio “Tray” Johnson

Tray made his transition on December 2, 2024, after suffering injuries in a single car accident on Interstate I-85 between Spartanburg and Greenville South Carolina.  He   was the beloved son of Deloris Ruth Johnson (deceased) of Union South Carolina. He was only 32 years old.

Tray was adopted by Deloris when he was six years old and became a joyful addition to the family.  Deloris said that one thing that influenced her to specifically choose Tray as her son was the fact that the other kids seemed to respect and look up to him.  They went to him for advice and approval. She saw that as a positive attribute and a major factor in him becoming her son.

Tray’s mother, Deloris made sure that he grew up in the positive environment of church - Corinth Baptist Church.  At Corinth, Tray had mentors including Rev. Calhoun, Mickey Dean Gist, James Farr, Arthur Barrett, and others in the church that encouraged him to do what was right and to be involved in positive things along with other children.

He was baptized at Corinth and was involved in youth programs including “Still I Rise”, the Sunday School, Boy Scouts of America and the choir.   Tray and his mother traveled to Washington, DC, and other cities to visit family.  They especially enjoyed attending family reunions and other events.  They even visited Europe for a family wedding.

He occasionally liked to cook special dishes, and won two top honors for his dishes- potato salad and a casserole.  He also, raised a prize chicken as a project. He also won a prize for a science project.  He was featured in the local newspaper.

Tray attended and graduated from Union County Public Schools.  After high school, he was accepted to Benedict College, the University of South Carolina, and Johnson and Wales Culinary School.  He received a certificate from another culinary school in Spartanburg.

Tray is survived by two aunts, Mary Odessa Johnson, and Modestine Lowery (LeRoy); cousins Marc, Scott, Terese (John), Taya, Nyla, Sloane, John, and Donovan; great aunts Elease Brunson, Carol Reyes, great uncle Alvin (Annette) and many other relatives and friends.  He is also survived by his birth mother and father, grandmother, aunts, and other relatives.

Tray will really be missed, but we are blessed to have had him in our lives.
