Maggie Wilson Obituary

Maggie Free Wilson 93, of 4218 Chesterfield Drive, of Columbia, South Carolina entered into eternal rest on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at PRIMSA Richland.
Maggie, affectionately known as “Aunt Mag” was born in Union, South Carolina to the late William E. Free, Sr. and Maggie Smith Free. While attending Tuskegee University she met and married the late Pernell G. Wilder. From this union she was blessed with a daughter, Charlotte Mae Wilder.
A Life Well Spent.......
Maggie began her Christian journey in Corinth Baptist Church in Union, South Carolina and joined First Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia, South Carolina after relocating back home from California.
As a child Maggie attended Macbeth Elementary School and graduated from Sims High School in 1944 in Union, South Carolina. Maggie obtained her bachelor’s degree in General and Vocational Home Economics from Tuskegee University in 1948. Maggie also furthered her studies at Grambling College, Southern University, and Indiana University. She became obtained her special needs teaching certification at California Lutheran College and earned a Masters Education in Home Economics with a minor in Food and Nutrition from.....
She began her career in education in her hometown, Union South Carolina. She was a champion for education and taught home economics, social studies, mathematics and served as a librarian in Louisiana and California on the high school and collegiate level. While serving as an educator, she sponsored youth programs and produced fashion shows and talent programs.
While working as an educator, Maggie obtained her real estate licenses in 1971. She owned and managed properties in California and South Carolina until her health began to decline. In addition to real estate, she became a co-owner of the First Impression Children Center in Columbia and assisted her daughter with a retail and jewelry business.

She was an avid traveler and enjoyed traveling around the world. While traveling the country, she enjoyed participating in vending events with her daughter Charlotte.
In the community, she served as dean for the Beta Pi Sigma Business and Professional Sorority, regional director of the Western Region for Tuskegee University Alumni Association, and was the sponsor of the youth organization Future Homemakers of America. Maggie was also affiliated with the National Education Association, California Teacher NAACP, and AARP.
Those Who Remain......
She is survived by her loving daughter, Mrs. Charlotte (Johnny) Wilder Taylor; grandchildren: Tarla Monique Ferguson or Augusta, GA and Marlin (LaToya) Brandon Ferguson of Columbia, SC; six great grandchildren: Tavia Mitchell, Marlin Grant, Jullian Ferguson, A’Nya Ferguson, Marlin Ferguson, Jr. and Faith Ferguson. She had on great-great granddaughter, Amaria Grant; three nieces Eleanor F.(George) Devlin of Roswell, GA; and Linda (Charlie) Fernandez of Belle View, II; Toni Henry of Richmond Va.and three nephews Howard (Gayle) Free of Spartanburg, SC; and William (Carol) Free of Orangeburg, SC;  Dwight Henry of NC. a host of close friends and other relatives. She was predeceased by two brothers and two sisters.
