Clarence Hughes Sr.

Deacon Clarence Hughes Sr. departed this earthly life Monday, May 4, 2020 at Union Medical Center. He was the youngest child of the late James “Cooter” Hughes and the late Viola Worthy Hughes. He was preceded in death by sisters: Daisy Mae Lott and Elizabeth Lindsay; and brothers: Rev. Hubert Hughes and Albert Hughes.
Affectionately known as “Hugo” or “Puff”, Clarence was a 1963 graduate of Sims High School and was employed with Vulcan Material Company for 39 years. He was a member of
Jerusalem Baptist Church and loved his church family. He was Chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the All Male Choir, and President of the Union County Ushers Union.
Clarence’s mother passed when he was 14 months old. He was reared in the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Daisy Mae and Wallace Lott along with their children: Clyde Lewis Hughes, Fred (Edith) Hughes, Viola Broadus, Annie McBeth, Pearl Crawford, Robert (Jackie) Lott, Paul Lott, Douglas Lott, Melvin Lott and Shirley Rice.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He never met a stranger and all who he came in contact with fell in love with his humor and wit. “Hugo” was an avid lover of the Pittsburg Steelers.
Those he leaves to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years: Joyce Thomas Hughes; two sons: Clarence “Bubba” Hughes Jr. of Union, SC and Gerald (Ashley) Hughes Sr. of Spartanburg, SC; four daughters: Sheila (Marion) Eison Jr. of Pacolet, SC, Ella (late Kimzy) Smith of the home, Maria LaGrace Harris of Spartanburg, SC, and Tasha (Robert Jr.) Jennings of Pacolet, SC; two granddaughters reared in the home: Asia (James) Roscoe and Michelle (Sherman) Sarratt both of Union, SC; one grandson reared in the home: Timothy Hughes; additional granddaughters, Ashley, Latressa, Shanique, Ariel, Mariana, Chelsey, Danielle, Jada, Aaliyah, Camay, and Taylor, Timi’l, Tristan; additional grandsons: Robert III, Joe III, Jordan, Gerald Jr., Michael, Jeremiah, Knowledge and Christopher; great-grandchildren: Jaelyn, London, Skylar, Janae, Jacie, Shayana, Shyhavion, Nova, Endia, Ayden, Elijah, and Jackson; brother: Jessie James Hughes, Sr. of Union, SC, aunt: Viola (Maurice) Jones of Union, SC; sisters-in-law: Thelma Hughes of Columbus, GA, Effie Minter of Snellville, GA, Mary Gist of Pacolet, SC, and Thelma (Roy) Logan, Linda (Elliott) Long, Ola Black Thomas and Louise Palmer Thomas, all of Spartanburg, SC; brothers-in-law, Johnny McDowell of Chesnee, SC, Elder Fred (Belinda) Thomas, Doug (Carrie) Thomas, both of Spartanburg, SC; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends
